Senior Systems & Network Engineer (Kung Fu Grand Master)

Your inspiration:
Are you looking for a place where you’ll get to build a SDN provisioning platform one week, design a resilient multi-site network over dark fiber the next, and reverse engineer a serial protocol to monitor building infrastructure after that? A place that thrives on curiosity and creativity, where new services and ideas are constantly explored to find better solutions to challenges? Do you revel in the fine details of elegant design, with an appreciation for form as much as function? Would it be refreshing to have teammates who also value integrity, going that extra mile, and striving to make a difference? If you've answered yes to everything so far, this may be the perfect position for you!

We're looking for someone to be our lead technical team member, responsible for all system and network operations. This is a DevOps style role: while our focus is more on building systems and networking than application development, we strongly believe in automation, integration, and collaboration. There are no silos here! We should note that networking is at the core of our business and deep expertise is required for this position, however, more time on a daily basis will be spent building systems. A remarkable degree of versatility and experience across platforms and languages, as well as a natural mechanical inclination, enjoying hardware as much as software, is also required for this role. This encompasses everything from building an interactive video wall to composing streams and queries for Riemann. You should be the person all your friends go to when they’re stumped. In short, your kung fu must be the best. A keen eye for detail along with an appreciation for structure, organization, and documentation are critical too. Just being able to build something doesn’t cut it; you’ve also got to make it look good and be user friendly!

While it’s expected that you're a talented individual who can tackle anything, your focus should always remain on supporting our clients and your team; without them, nothing else really matters! It's absolutely vital that you're able to work collaboratively in a team, lead team projects, and mentor your team members.

About the team you’re joining:
Aecero is unique as one of the few highest-tier data center operators and the largest data center in Orange County, with over 110,000 sq. ft. Companies host their servers here and rely on us to guarantee their equipment remains secure and online, even if an asteroid strikes. We also serve as a carrier hotel, with more fiber capacity built into our campus than nearly any other property in Southern California. Suffice it to say, our internet is faster than yours.

We’re located in Anaheim, CA, just minutes from Downtown Anaheim, Downtown Fullerton, and Downtown Disney. There are a whole lot of downtown happenings near here! Our office is a lively environment with a tight-knit team that’s driven and motivated. Ambition is nurtured and rewarded, but above all we’re friends who appreciate and inspire each other as well as our clients.

Qualifications that are essential (minimum requirements):

  • 8+ years’ experience with Linux, Windows, and VMware platform administration, with a knack for automating everything.
  • Coding and scripting experience in several languages, able to hack together open source solutions and troubleshoot obscure compiling errors.
  • Network experience with Cisco 6500, Cisco ASR, and Juniper MX series routers, using BGP with complex route-map and ACL configurations.
  • Network experience with Ciena 8700, 5000, and 6500 series equipment, using Metro Ethernet, MPLS-TP, and complex tag translation configurations.
  • Public cloud platform (AWS/Microsoft Azure/Google Compute) network configuration experience.
  • Mechanical inclination, including hardware and software integration for fun and useful contraptions.
  • Innate meticulousness, especially in how you organize, plan, and create things small and large.
  • Fantastic written and verbal communication skills, effectively interacting with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with the initiative to find opportunity for improvement and make it happen.
  • Bachelor’s degree or other challenging experience of at least four years that you persisted through.

What you’ll primarily be doing (the many hats worn):

  • Server Jockey: Manage all aspects of Linux (KVM/Docker), Windows (Hyper-V/AD/Hybrid Office 365), and VMware infrastructure for internal use and client-facing applications.
  • Network Ninja: Manage carrier class IP and DWDM network, including monitoring, hardening, route optimization, and peering relationships.
  • Application Wizard: Research and integrate new platforms and services to improve our operations (e.g. should we move monitoring to Prometheus?).
  • Support Sensei: Assist our clients, sales, and facility teams with technical inquiries, including developing support documentation and being available on-call.
  • MacGyver: Tackle "variety hour" projects involving mechanical and low voltage electrical systems, such as modding our pinball machine and assisting our facility team with building automation systems.

What’s in it for you (the good stuff):

  • Great pay, and even better growth potential.
  • Training and personal development opportunities, so you’ll never stop learning.
  • PPO/HMO with vision and dental for employees, with company contribution toward the cost of dependents.
  • Company-paid life insurance and long-term disability policies.
  • Ten days of paid time off in addition to ten paid holidays per year.
  • Unlimited free snacks, drinks, and most importantly, espresso.
  • Office field trips and team lunches.
  • Bragging rights working at the most impressive data center in Southern California.
